Even during the antic times when men gazed at the shapes of gemstones and crystals whose origins they could not understand or explain, it is not quite astonishing that it was believed that these fascinating formations held some mystical powers. During the Bronze Age, copper and silver were mined and jewels, cult statuettes and ornaments were made from bronze, copper and rocks of unusually striking color and shape. Moreover the ancient Egyptians also inlaid silver and gold with semi-precious stones such as jasper, carnelian, lapis lazuli, turquoise and amethyst. Signet ring was particularly the popular jewelry item while there were also other motifs used such s falcon, lotus, eye and serpent which were delivered from religious symbols.

However the Roman jewelry was quite massive with ropes of pearls that were highly prized while the medieval jewelry includes large brooches. Men and women during the renaissance wore gold chains, pendants and jeweled collars that were usually designed and sometimes rendered by renowned artists. Some ornaments crowded with stones were also worn to excess during the late 17^th century. However jewelry was almost outmoded by the late 18^th century by decorate buttons, snuffboxes and watches but the 19^th century brought along revival of the cameo and bracelet. With the start of factory jewelry production, artists declined and there was costume jewelry introduced during the 20^th century. Nevertheless, there has always been improved interest in hand wrought jewelry right from the craft revival of 1960s.

Gemstones were also used largely in the production of craved dies, seals, stamps used in marking documents or ownership or objects with sign of its official origin. Some ancient seals were normally engraved with unique designs to be impressed on wax or on damp clay. The magic of gemstones has been widespread for several centuries. Even though the use of seals declined after the 12^th century the heads of the church and states along with several civic dignitaries started using gemstone seals craved with heraldic designs to stamp documents.
