According to historians, the evolution of Pearls dates back to 4000 years ago, when they were worn by people in ancient Middle East and Asian Societies. The finest quality Pearls are found in the Persian Gulf. Pearls are sourced from Gulf of Mannar, the islands of South Pacific, Gulf of California and Gulf of Mexico.

The beautiful white Pearl gemstones is the only gemstone created from a living organism, the oyster. When a foreign body invades the oyster shell, it secretes a crystalline substance known as Nacre. It creates shiny walls on the pearls. The walls of the pearl are created over a long period of time, usually more than 3 years. A naturally spherical shaped pearl is very rare and extremely expensive.
Chronicles of Roman Era record that a Roman general financed an entire military campaign with the sale of one pearl earring.  Knights in the medieval age wore Pearls to battles, for protection from the enemies.

According to a legend, the last Queen of Egypt, Cleopatra, claimed she can make the most expensive meal ever. The King, Antony gave her vinegar to prepare the meal. She took one of her pearl earrings and dissolved it in that sour wine and drank it up. The King was very pleased with her love for him. From then on Pearls in ancient Rome were attested to the wealthy and noble group. In renaissance Europe, laws were passed stating that only the rich and noble could possess pearls.
Pearl cultivation began in the early 20th century. Until then pearls were very expensive and only the wealthy class could afford them.  Pearls are found in many varieties such as freshwater pearls, cultured pearls, Tahitian pearls and black pearls. Natural pearls prepared from oysters, clams and mollusks were treasured for their beauty. Freshwater pearls were cultivated in North America. Saltwater pearls were exported to Spain and France in Europe. However, the production was discontinued due to pollution and excess fishing. The Han dynasty in China was the first to start the fishery industry.

Towards the beginning of 1900s Japanese researchers introduced ways to induce oysters to artificially create pearls. A foreign substance is deliberately introduced in the shell and then it is returned back into the sea where they are observed in guarded bays. A suitable environment is created to ensure pearls grow in the oysters.

In recent years, due to the advent of cultured pearls, pearl jewelry is now more accessible and affordable than before. Pearls are associated with purity, wisdom and perfection.  The Holy Bible and the Holy Koran have multiple references to the Pearl.
