How is blue sapphire gemstone formed?

Blue sapphire is a natural gemstone which in its natural state is composed of corundum, an aluminum oxide. After diamonds, corundum is considered to be the second hardest natural material. Corundum forms in igneous rock which forms after magma cools down or metamorphic rock. When the material cools down and changes shape, the crystallization process also takes place. Corundum is actually difficult to extract from solid rock. That is why it is usually mined as the loose gemstones from stream sediments.
